Officials estimate that the state is currently short of nearly 24,000 housing units, and that in the next two decades, it will need a total of 90,000 additional units. The shortage of aging-ready homes is part of a broader housing crisis in the region. In New Hampshire, 20 percent of the population is over 65, and that number is expected to increase significantly over the next several decades. According to a report released this month by the US Census Bureau, only about 20 percent of New England homes meet basic standards for seniors: a step-free entryway and a bedroom and full bathroom on the entry level. Housing for New England’s seniors is in short supply, and could worsen as the region’s population ages.
